Bermuda

10 August 2014: Bermuda

Arrived in Bermuda this morning,  in pouring rain. So much for getting up early to watch the pilot boat guide us into the harbour and watch the sail inn from deck 13. Ship only cleared by custom and border control after 11h30 so when we left ship, we first stayed in dockside building to see if rain was going to stop but to no avail, just kept coming down in buckets.

Then hubby went back to ship to get us rain ponchos and my slipslops because I was not going to get my running shoes sopping wet!! So off we went in pouring rain! We stopped at a local restaurant to get out of the rain and to do our internet business. While sitting there, a poor guy with a family of 6 was trying to draw money at an ATM and it swallowed his card, I don’t have to tell you what his reaction was or what he had to say!!

So this drama played out in front of us, really felt sorry for them because what now? You need money for the ferries and busses and anything you want to do on the island. His daughter of about 11 went up to her dad and just put her arms around him and that was all I needed to get me tearful. Hope they get all sorted tomorrow because we are in Bermuda until Tuesday afternoon.

Hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow then I want to take the ferry to other parts of the island. To get there I will take the ferry the quickest and cheapest way of getting around. Takes 45 min to get to the furthest point of the island from where we are docked, a place called St Georges.

Some interesting facts about the island: 400 shipwrecks around the island, 179 islands in total, 121 churches and 57 000 inhabitants. Only have rain water on the island, no fountains or springs. So they need the rain!! Each family may only have 1 car on the island.

Well until tomorrow, bye.
